Contemporary music refers to the music current in the contemporary era following the modern era. Before the modern era, each region's own traditional music persisted for a long time, and musical exchange was not as active as it is today. In the contemporary era, however, when globalization became firmly established, genres of popular music shared by nearly every country in the global village emerged, and the traditional music once enjoyed only within each region also gradually took on contemporary forms, forming another major branch of contemporary music. Historically, of course, it is unclear exactly from which year the contemporary era begins. The general trend, however, is to define it as starting from the 20th century, or from the point after the two world wars. Contemporary music can be broadly classified into three types.
- Each region's traditional music (Traditional Music) and folk music (Folk Music), reinterpreted in a contemporary way or globalized.
- Could be included in item 1, but as a broader category: modernized, globalized Western classical music (Contemporary Classical Music).
- Popular music (Popular Music).
