CVS (Concurrent Versions System), also known as the Concurrent Versioning System, implements a version control system. It keeps track of all work and all changes made to files, usually in a software project, and allows several (geographically dispersed) developers to collaborate. CVS is distributed under the GNU General Public License. CVS was widely used in open source projects. Now that CVS has reached its limits, Subversion has been developed to replace CVS.
