In Korean: 예측 분석 (predictive analytics), Korean: 데이터 과학 (data science), Korean: 기계 학습 (machine learning), and related fields, concept drift or drift is an evolution of data that invalidates the data model.

It happens when the statistical properties of the target variable, which the model is trying to predict, change over time in unforeseen ways.

Drift Detection

Model drift refers to the degradation of machine learning model performance due to changes in data or in the relationships between input and output variables. Model drift, also known as model decay, can negatively impact model performance, resulting in faulty decision-making and bad predictions.

Overview

Drift Detection is a technique for detecting when the data a machine learning model encounters in production shows a different distribution from that at initial training time.

Data drift is one of the main factors that can degrade a model's prediction accuracy, and detecting and responding to it in real time is very important in fields such as MLOps, finance, security, and retail.

Concept and definition

Drift detection is the process of detecting phenomena in which, over time after model training, the feature distribution of the input data changes or the relationship with the labels shifts. The main types of drift are as follows:

  • Data drift (Covariate Drift): change in the distribution of input variables
  • Concept drift (Concept Drift): change in the input-output relationship
  • Label drift (Prior Drift): change in the label distribution

If such drift is not detected early, model performance can degrade sharply.
