Main memory or computer memory refers to the computer hardware device that stores numbers, instructions, data, and so on in a computer. The term is synonymous with primary storage. Computer memory operates at high speed, as RAM does, for example, and this distinguishes it from storage devices that provide high-capacity storage space for programs and data. When necessary, the contents of computer memory can be transferred to secondary storage, which is made possible by a memory management technique called virtual memory.
