Computer engineering is an academic discipline that integrates several fields of electrical engineering and computer science needed to develop computer hardware and software. Its aim, in the modern information society, is to study computer hardware and software, to develop and master computer systems and computer-related technologies, and to apply them in each field.
On the hardware side it divides into electromagnetic theory, microprocessors, and electronic circuits; on the software side it divides into computer science theory, computer programming, computer systems, and so on. It is a discipline that links computer science and electronic engineering, and typical areas are those that need both hardware and software knowledge, such as computers and other electronics, or robotics.
- Fundamentals: the part dealing with the logic that underlies the development of computer technology, such as electromagnetics, circuits, discrete mathematics, data structures, automata, and algorithms.
- Programming: the core field of computer technology, studying techniques for instructing and operating computers in various programming languages such as C, C++, and Java.
- Systems: covers the hardware structure of computers, including the CPU, and the operating systems, networks, etc. that make up computer systems.
