Compiz is software that applies 3D acceleration to the window manager through OpenGL. Compiz shows off the true value of 3D graphics in every desktop environment, including GNOME and KDE. At one point, disagreements among developers over copyright and licensing split it into Beryl and Compiz. However, six months after Beryl split off, they merged back into Compiz and got the new name Compiz Fusion.
