A communication protocol is a system of formats and rules for exchanging messages between computers or telecommunication equipment. A communication protocol may include signaling, authentication, and error detection and correction capabilities. A protocol defines the format, semantics, and synchronization of communication, but it is independent of how it is implemented. Therefore, protocols can be implemented using hardware, software, or sometimes both.
