Common Internet File System

CIFS (Common Internet File System) is an extended version of the SMB file sharing protocol for networks, and is an Internet standard file protocol that supports both Windows and Unix environments. Unlike the earlier closed SMB protocol, the CIFS protocol definition was decided with the participation of several Unix vendors, so as Samba versions advanced (Samba 2.2 and later), it complied well with the CIFS protocol and its stability improved considerably.
