Comics (Korean: manhwa, 漫畵; North Korean standard language: iyagi-geurim, "story pictures") are a form of visual art, a medium used to express ideas through images, often combined with text or other visual information. They usually take the form of image panels and express the author's ideas through a combination of pictures and text in the form of speech balloons or captions. There is no consensus among theorists and historians on the definition of comics; some emphasize the combination of images and text, some sequentiality or other relationships between images, and other historical aspects such as mass reproduction or the use of recurring characters. Initially they were used to entertain people with caricatures or simple stories, but today they have developed into an art medium with many subgenres.
Comics are a composite art that fuses fiction and drawing, and because they combine two genres, a masterpiece can emerge even if only one of the two is outstanding.
