Code page is a traditional IBM term used for a specific character encoding table. A character encoding table is a mapping in which a sequence of bits, called a single octet (byte), representing integers from 0 to 255, is associated with specific characters. IBM and Microsoft often assign code pages to character sets (charset).
IBM PC (OEM) code pages
These code pages are often used in operating systems such as MS-DOS and contain many box-drawing characters. Because the original IBM personal computer code page (number 437) was not designed for international use, incompatible variants were introduced. Microsoft refers to these as OEM code pages. Examples are as follows:
- 437: original IBM PC code page
- 737: Greek
- 850: "Multilingual (Latin 1)" (Western European languages)
- 852: "Slavic (Latin 2)" (Eastern European languages)
- 855: Cyrillic alphabet
- 857: Turkish
- 858: "Multilingual" - euro sign
- 860: Portuguese
- 861: Icelandic
- 863: French Canadian
- 865: Nordic
- 862: Hebrew
- 866: Cyrillic alphabet
- 869: Greek
Other code pages
- 10000: Macintosh Roman encoding (followed by several other Mac character sets)
- 10007: Macintosh Cyrillic encoding
- 10029: Macintosh Central European encoding
- 932: Japanese support
- 936: GBK Simplified Chinese support
- 949: Korean support
- 950: Traditional Chinese (Taiwan) support
- 1200: UCS-2LE Unicode little-endian
- 1201: UCS-2BE Unicode big-endian
- 1252: Windows-1252 (ANSI code page)
- 65000: UTF-7 Unicode
- 65001: UTF-8 Unicode
- ASMO44: Arabic support
- MIK: Bulgarian, Russian support
In modern applications, operating systems, and programming languages, IBM code pages are marked as obsolete because newer international standards such as ISO 8859-1 and Unicode have been established.
