Code-division multiple access (CDMA) is a multiple access technology in mobile communications that uses codes. It was first commercialized in Korea in 1996.

CDMA is a technology that uses codes to let multiple users access a single cell. Since mobile communications have many users communicating over a limited frequency band, multiple access technology is essential. Among other widely used technologies besides CDMA is time-division multiple access (TDMA), used in GSM.

CDMA spreads the spectrum of coded signals and transmits them so that multiple users can access the same frequency band simultaneously. The terminal decodes and demodulates the spread signal so that the user can use the service.
