Chemistry is a branch of natural science that studies the properties, composition, structure, and changes of matter, and the changes in energy that accompany them. Physics also deals with matter, but whereas physics deals with the motion and energy of objects, including both elements and compounds, and their thermal, electrical, optical, and mechanical properties, and seeks to build unified theories from these phenomena, chemistry takes matter itself as its object of study. Chemistry provides ways to synthesize new substances suited to specific purposes from existing substances, which brings many benefits such as increased crop yields, the treatment and prevention of disease, greater energy efficiency, and reduced environmental pollution.
