(For the Chatterbot Machine learning library, see here)

A chatterbot is a computer program designed to simulate conversation with humans through voice or text. It is also called a talkbot, chatbot, or chatterbox.

Unlike natural language processing, most chatterbots work by detecting specific words or phrases in the input and outputting a matching pre-prepared response.

Terms

Natural language
The language humans use to communicate (opposite: language machines understand, machine language, code)
Natural language processing (NLU - Natural Language Understanding)
"Understanding" what a person has said or written as a sentence/paragraph/text. Identifying the speaker's intent and the key keywords used within that intent.
Natural language processing engine
A program or tool that enables natural language processing.
  • There are many kinds of AI engines, such as speech and image engines, and the natural language processing engine is one of them.
  • Watson also has several AI engines. Among them is natural language processing, and within natural language processing, the engine related to dialogue processing is Conversation.
  • Likewise, among the various AI engines of 'Kakao i', there is a separate dialogue processing engine.
Intent
The speaker's intent behind an utterance spoken in natural language.
Utterance (dialogue sentence, corpus)
Various example sentences expressing an intent; they can be seen as training material (a set of examples) for training the AI. You have to input many different sentences (Utterances) with the same meaning into the dialogue engine and train it so that it can identify the correct intent across varied expressions.
Entity (component)
The components that make up a sentence. Mostly in noun form.
Scenario
A pre-designed conversation flow
Slot Filling
When several pieces of information are needed before an answer can be given, filling in (Filling) all of those pieces of information (Slots); the bot keeps asking questions until all slots are filled.
Smalltalk
Everyday conversation. Conversations for social communication
Natural language generation (NLG - Natural Language Generation)
There are methods that generate text from scratch and methods that produce it according to set rules.
