CCD stands for Charge-Coupled Device, a sensor that converts light into electric charge to obtain an image (畵像). It is also called a charge-coupled device (電荷結合素子), and was jointly developed by George E. Smith and Willard Boyle in 1969. A CCD consists of a circuit in which multiple capacitors (Condenser) are interconnected in pairs, and each capacitor in the circuit transfers its accumulated charge to the capacitor next to it. CCDs are used as key components in devices such as digital still cameras, optical scanners, and digital video cameras.

A CCD chip is a chip with many photodiodes gathered together. When light shines on each photodiode, electrons are generated according to the amount of light particles, that is, photons; the number of electrons in each photodiode represents the brightness of the light, and by reconstructing this information, the image data that makes up the picture is created.
