Cartography is the study and practice of making maps. Combining science, aesthetics, and technique, cartography is based on the land on which reality can be made into a model according to ways of efficiently representing information about real space.

The fundamental problems of traditional cartography are

  • To select the subject of the map and the characteristics of the object to be mapped. This relates to map editing. The characteristics may be physical, such as roads and land size, or things such as natural features or administrative districts.
  • To represent the terrain of the surveyed object on a flat medium. This relates to map projection.
  • To eliminate characteristics of the surveyed object that are not relevant to the map's purpose. This relates to generalization.
  • To reduce the complexity of the characteristics to be surveyed. This also relates to generalization.
  • To arrange the elements of the map so that its message is best conveyed to its viewers. This relates to map design.

Modern cartography is closely integrated with geographic information science and constitutes many of its theoretical and practical foundations.
