bzip2 is a compression algorithm and compression software based on the Burrows–Wheeler transform. It was developed by Julian Seward, and version 0.15 was first released in July 1996. The software is open source and has a license similar to the BSD license.
Like gzip, bzip2 compresses only a single file, and compressed files usually get the .bz2 extension, so it is commonly used together with tar.
