Bus

A bus is a computer term for an electrical pathway built to carry information or signals between the devices inside or outside a computer. The local bus is usually called the computer bus; it is connected almost directly to the CPU and to slots on one or more expansion buses. This direct connection matters because it avoids the bottleneck caused by the expansion bus and raises throughput.

Evolution of bus architecture

Early computers had a single-bus architecture. As the speed gap between the CPU, memory, hard disk, and peripherals grew, the bottleneck became more severe. To solve this, the bus needed to be subdivided, and computer buses have become increasingly subdivided over time.
