Btrfs (B-tree file system, or Butter file system, Better F S) is a file system whose development is currently led by Chris Mason at Facebook. It has become fairly stable, and some places are starting to use it experimentally.
It is licensed under the GNU General Public License, and as of February 5, 2014, the latest version is 3.13 (included by default in kernels released after Linux kernel 2.6.32).
The copy-on-write B-tree, Btrfs's core data structure, was originally proposed by IBM researcher Ohad Rodeh in a presentation at USENIX 2007.
