A breadcrumb trail is one of the techniques in a user interface for visually indicating where the user currently is. The English name of this technique comes from the breadcrumbs the siblings scatter to find their way home in "Hansel and Gretel".

Websites

Breadcrumbs are usually displayed horizontally and show the path from the home screen to the current screen as follows.

처음 화면 → 주 메뉴 → 부 메뉴 → 현재 메뉴

Breadcrumbs on websites can be broadly divided into three types.

  • Path: shows the screens the user visited before arriving at that screen. It can differ from user to user even for the same page.
  • Location: shows where the screen is in the website's structure. It can be added to a page statically.
  • Attribute: shows information about how the current screen is categorized.
