The Bourne shell (or sh for short) was the default Unix shell of Unix Version 7. Today it has been replaced by the Thompson shell, and the Thompson shell's executable is also named sh. It was developed by Stephen Bourne at AT&T Bell Labs and was first included in Unix Version 7 in 1977. It remained popular for a long time, to the point of being used as the default shell for many Unix accounts.
