BitTorrent is the name of a P2P (peer-to-peer) file transfer protocol and also of the application software that uses it. With BitTorrent, files are stored distributed across the Internet, and a file is fetched from many places at once over multiple connections, which makes transfers faster.

The BitTorrent protocol was created by programmer Bram Cohen; its design began in April 2001, and the first implementation was released on July 2, 2001. It is currently maintained by BitTorrent Inc., the company Cohen founded. The original BitTorrent program was written in Python using a distributed hash table and is distributed under an open-source license. In addition, various BitTorrent clients compatible with the BitTorrent protocol have been released.

Internet traffic using this protocol is known to account for a substantial share of worldwide Internet traffic, but accurate statistics are said to be impossible to measure.
