As the description says, Apache Avro is a data serialization system.
It has the following features.
- Rich data structures
- Supports a compact, fast binary type
- Persistently stores files in containers
- Remote procedure call
- Simple to use. Provided as an API
- No additional source coding needed except in special cases
Avro supports most of the same features as Thrift, and provides an RPC mechanism and data serialization like Google's Protocol Buffers.
Avro has a clear advantage over Thrift: in particular, an application does not need the static code generation otherwise required to use RPC. (In general)
