Aviation is a term for flight using machines such as aircraft, or for activities related to the aviation industry. Aircraft include fixed-wing aircraft, forward-swept wings, rotary-wing aircraft, hot air balloons, airships, and so on.

Aviation began with the development of the hot air balloon in the 18th century. Aviation technology advanced further with Otto Lilienthal's glider flights in 1896. With the Wright brothers' invention of the airplane in the early 1900s, aviation technology grew by leaps and bounds.
