Artificial general intelligence

Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is the intelligence of a (hypothetical) machine that could successfully perform any intellectual task a human can. It is a major goal of AI research and an important subject for SF writers and futurists.

Artificial general intelligence is also called strong AI, full AI, or a machine's ability to perform 'general intelligent action'.

Some, distinguishing it from 'strong AI', call software used to study or accomplish specific problem solving or reasoning tasks 'applied AI' (or 'narrow AI', 'weak AI'). Unlike strong AI, weak AI does not attempt to perform the full range of human cognitive abilities.

The 5 levels of AGI according to OpenAI

Level 1: Conversational AI

AI at the current level: conversational AI is the form of AI we are most familiar with today. At this level, AI can converse with people in natural language. Models such as ChatGPT, used for customer service support, AI coaches, and help writing social media content, fall into this category. Many companies now use AI at this level to improve customer interactions and streamline internal processes.

Conversational AI in everyday life

  • Customer service: 24/7 customer support through chatbots.
  • Content writing: help writing social media posts and blog posts.
  • Education: answering students' questions and providing study materials.

Level 2: Reasoning AI

AI of the near future: reasoning AI means AI with basic problem-solving abilities. At this level, it can solve problems at a level similar to a human with doctoral-level education. The leap to this level means AI becomes able to solve complex problems beyond simple conversation.

Potential business uses

  • Data analysis: drawing insights from complex datasets.
  • Expertise: solving problems in specialized fields such as law and medicine.
  • Decision support: AI consultants that help executives make decisions.

Level 3: Autonomous AI

AI of the future: autonomous AI means AI that can carry out work independently for days without user intervention. At this level, it is far more reliable than today's automation systems and can resolve problems on its own when they arise. This makes it possible to automate much of a business and put human resources into more strategic work.

Examples of autonomous AI

  • Project management: automatically adjusting team schedules and monitoring progress.
  • Automated production: autonomous problem solving in factory automation systems.
  • Customer support: fully autonomous chatbots that handle customer inquiries and propose solutions.

Level 4: Innovating AI

Innovative AI: innovating AI means AI that goes beyond simply performing given tasks and can develop and improve new methods on its own. At this level, AI innovates existing processes and finds more efficient and effective methods. This will greatly help companies keep innovating and stay competitive.

The potential of innovating AI

  • Product development: proposing new product ideas and building prototypes.
  • Process improvement: maximizing the efficiency of existing business processes.
  • R&D: proposing new research methodologies and designing experiments.

Level 5: Organizational AI

The ultimate AI: organizational AI means AI that can do the work of an entire organization. At this level, AI can replace the roles of all employees and perform every function of the organization. This means an organization can run without human intervention, and it marks the arrival of full AGI.

The impact of organizational AI

  • Fully automated companies: AI performs every function, including management, operations, production, and sales.
  • Strategic decision-making: AI handles everything from market analysis to strategy formulation and execution.
  • Global operations: operating in global markets regardless of time and place.

AGI is an engineering problem, not a model training problem

Today's large language models have hit the limits of scaling, and AGI must be approached through system architecture design rather than bigger models

  • True AGI must be built as an engineering achievement in which many components, such as context management, persistent memory, deterministic workflows, and collaboration among specialized models, are organically combined
  • LLMs still have structural limitations such as poor context retention across sessions, no reliable multi-step reasoning, and no memory
  • Achieving AGI requires a modular structure in which each part has a clear purpose, like the human brain, and a distributed-systems approach, that is, building infrastructure such as fault-tolerant pipelines, monitoring, rolling updates, and large-scale testing frameworks
  • So the AGI race will be decided by systems engineering capability, not GPU scale
