ARPAnet is the world's first packet-switching network, built under the leadership of the U.S. Department of Defense's Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA for short; in North Korean usage, the "Modern Research Planning Bureau Network"). It started in 1969 and is known as the prototype of today's Internet. The name is often written in all capitals as ARPANET.
Circuit switching was widely used at the time, but since ARPANET was launched, packet switching has been widely used to exchange data and voice. At launch, there were four nodes: UCLA, the University of California, Santa Barbara, the Stanford Research Institute (SRI), and the University of Utah.
ARPANET used a transmission protocol called NCP (Network Control Program), but in 1983 TCP/IP replaced it, and the network evolved into today's Internet.
