Display drivers

The vesa driver included by default will work with most video cards. In most cases, however, you can greatly improve performance by installing the driver suited to each video card. Depending on the video card you use, see the AMD, ATI, Intel, or NVIDIA pages.

Check your graphics card.

$ lspci | grep -e VGA -e 3D

You can search the package database for the full list of open-source video drivers. Install the appropriate driver.

$ pacman -Ss xf86-video

Xorg automatically searches for installed drivers:

  • If it cannot find the specific driver installed for the hardware, it searches for fbdev (xf86-video-fbdev).
  • If that is not found, it searches for vesa (xf86-video-vesa), the generic driver. This driver handles many chipsets but does not include 2D or 3D acceleration.
  • If vesa is not found, Xorg falls back to kernel mode setting, which includes GLAMOR acceleration (see modesetting(4)).
