arXiv ("archive") is a website that collects preprint papers in mathematics, physics, astronomy, computer science, quantitative biology, and statistics. Almost all papers in mathematics, physics, and astronomy can be found here. On October 3, 2008, arXiv.org passed 500,000 documents. About 5,000 new e-prints are posted every month.
arXiv, long-standing and traditional in the physics community: there have been many proposals and attempts to provide broad access to scientific literature on the web, but the oldest and most successful traditional service is the Los Alamos e-print archive, now called arXiv. It was first created as an electronic alternative for circulating high-energy physics preprints, but Ginsparg automated the process and developed it into a large free archive of unreviewed papers, so that today it is a fully automated electronic archive and research paper distribution server for physics and related fields, where both preprints and published papers are available. Used by 160,000 people a week in the United States alone, it can truly be called the most representative electronic archive.
