The Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) is a layer 6 (presentation layer) communication protocol that provides file services for OS X and classic Mac OS. Some define it as the part of the system responsible for preparing and exchanging information on behalf of applications in the client–server model of a protocol that supports distributed file sharing on AppleTalk networks. In Mac OS X, AFP is one of several file services supported, including Server Message Block (SMB), Network File System (NFS), File Transfer Protocol (FTP), and WebDAV. AFP currently supports Unicode file names, POSIX and access control list permissions, Unix allocation, resource forks, and advanced file locking. Before Mac OS 9, AFP was the primary protocol for file services.
