Apache Iceberg is an open-source table format designed for large analytic datasets stored in data lakes. It also addresses many of the limitations of existing data lake table formats, bringing improved reliability, performance, and flexibility to data lakehouse architectures. You can think of it as an intelligent layer sitting on top of data lake storage such as Cloud Storage. It provides database-like capabilities to massive datasets. Rather than simply managing files, Iceberg manages a table as a collection of data files, supporting features such as schema evolution, time travel, and more efficient query planning. This lets data analysts, data scientists, and engineers work with data in the data lake more easily and efficiently and scale up their analytic workloads.
