Apache HBase

Apache HBase is an open, non-relational distributed database for the Hadoop platform. It is modeled after Google's BigTable and written in Java. It is developed as part of the Apache Software Foundation's Apache Hadoop project and runs on top of HDFS, Hadoop's distributed file system. It provides capabilities similar to Google's BigTable, offering a fault-tolerant way of storing large quantities of sparse data.

HBase provides compression, in-memory operation, and Bloom filters, as outlined in the original BigTable. Tables in HBase serve as input and output for MapReduce jobs running on Hadoop, and can be accessed through a Java API or through REST, Avro, or Thrift gateways.

HBase is not a direct replacement for traditional SQL databases, but it is used by data-driven websites such as Facebook's messaging platform.
