Apache Cordova (formerly PhoneGap) is a mobile development framework created by Nitobi and acquired by Adobe Systems. It lets software programmers build applications for mobile devices using JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3 instead of device-specific languages such as Objective-C. The resulting applications are hybrid, meaning that all layout rendering is done through a web view rather than the platform's native UI framework, and that they are not just web apps but are packaged for distribution and can access native device APIs. Since version 1.9, native code and parts of hybrid code can also be freely mixed.

The software underlying PhoneGap is Apache Cordova. This software was at one time simply called PhoneGap and then Apache Callback. Apache Cordova is open-source software.
