Apache Cassandra

Apache Cassandra is a free and open-source distributed NoSQL database management system designed to handle large amounts of data across many servers, providing high performance with no single point of failure. Cassandra supports clusters spanning multiple datacenters, and its masterless asynchronous replication allows low-latency operations for all clients.

Cassandra also scores highly in terms of performance. In 2012, University of Toronto researchers studying NoSQL systems concluded that "In terms of scalability, there is a clear winner throughout our experiments. Cassandra achieves the highest throughput for the maximum number of nodes in all experiments," while noting that "this comes at the price of high write and read latencies."

Why you should choose ScyllaDB as an alternative to Cassandra

For reference, Scylla is an open-source column-based NoSQL DB

  • Fully compatible with Cassandra and far better in performance and cost
    • Throughput 2x–5x on a 3-node cluster. 3x–8x faster at P99 < 10ms. Adding nodes 3x faster, replacing nodes 4x faster
  • Scylla borrows much of Cassandra's architecture but is implemented in C++ to reduce Java's GC overhead, and uses 1 thread per core to minimize context switching
    • Can handle over 1 million R/W per node
    • Lower latency and stable performance
    • Self-tuning
    • High availability + scalability
    • Uses far fewer compute resources than Cassandra for the same workload
