Apache Baremaps

lastmod 2023-06-05created 2023-06-053 edits

Create custom vector tiles from OpenStreetMap and other data sources with Postgis and Java.

A toolkit for creating, publishing, and operating online maps

Features

  • Java-based open-source library released by the Apache Software Foundation (requires Java 17 or later)
  • Can serve a data pipeline, vector map tiles, and a geocoder at the same time
  • Lets you add OpenStreetMap, Natural Earth, topographic maps, 3D maps, and more to any website
  • Inspired by Osmosis, an OpenStreetMap data processing tool
  • But provides additional techniques such as the following
    • Parallel data processing with the Stream API introduced in Java 8
    • Faster data loading with PostgreSQL's COPY API
    • On-the-fly PostGIS geometry creation with JTS
    • Generation and serving of custom vector tiles
  • Previously the data pipeline (osmosis, etc.), vector tiles (MapLibre GL, etc.), and geocoder (Nominatim, etc.) had to be installed separately, but with Apache Baremaps that is no longer necessary
  • Currently in the incubator stage
