Nexus 7 reference
Notes on the Nexus 7.
- Devices with a screen like the Nexus 7 have a fairly high density, so scaling is hardly noticeable.
- When Android picks a bitmap to scale, it generally chooses the bitmap with the higher density. For tvdpi screens, it scales down the hdpi resources that most apps include to support hdpi phones.
- The Android tablet UI uses icons larger than regular app icons. To do this, it uses icons of a higher density. Activity.getLauncherLargeIconDensity() returns the density to use.
- App icons are a key element of a crisp screen, so the density one step higher is chosen so that the designed icons can be used without scaling. (mdpi->hdpi, hdpi->xhdpi, etc.) In the launcher and wherever app icons are used, tvdpi screens are treated as hdpi density and the designed size is used.
Result
- 320dp smartphones, 360dp smartphones.
- 400dp tablet phones (as of 2011, released only by Samsung; the Galaxy Tab (2010) is 7 inches but is classified with the Galaxy Note by dp.)
- 600dp 7-inch tablets.
- 720dp(800dp) 10-inch tablets.
