In classical mathematics, analytic geometry is geometry using the principles of analysis and algebra together with a coordinate system. This contrasts with the synthetic geometry of Euclidean geometry, which deals with certain geometric notions as primitives and uses reasoning based on axioms and theorems.
Typically, the Cartesian coordinate system is used to handle equations for planes, lines, and rectangles in two or three dimensions. Geometrically, it studies the Euclidean plane (two dimensions) and Euclidean space (three dimensions).
