Alpine Linux

lastmod 2023-12-17created 2022-06-147 edits

Alpine Linux is a Linux distribution based on musl and BusyBox, designed for security, simplicity, and resource efficiency. Up to the 3.8 release it used a hardened kernel, and it compiles all user-space binaries as position-independent executables with stack-smashing protection.

Because of its small size, it is commonly used in containers, where it provides fast boot times.

The postmarketOS project, designed to run on mobile devices, is based on Alpine Linux.

Checking the version

cat /etc/os-release

Troubleshooting

not found

When running an executable, it may fail to run properly and print "not found". This can be caused by missing libraries. Check with a utility like ldd.

apk --update add libc6-compat libstdc++ curl ca-certificates

GLIBC_REPO=https://github.com/sgerrand/alpine-pkg-glibc
GLIBC_VERSION=2.30-r0

for pkg in glibc-${GLIBC_VERSION} glibc-bin-${GLIBC_VERSION}; do
    curl -sSL ${GLIBC_REPO}/releases/download/${GLIBC_VERSION}/${pkg}.apk -o /tmp/${pkg}.apk
done

apk add --allow-untrusted /tmp/*.apk
rm -v /tmp/*.apk
/usr/glibc-compat/sbin/ldconfig /lib /usr/glibc-compat/lib
