Agentic Engine Optimization

Agentic Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring, formatting, and serving technical content so that AI coding agents can actually use it

About

  • Because AI coding agents consume documentation in a fundamentally different way from humans, human-centered optimization alone lets a growing share of AI traffic disappear without being captured by analytics tools
  • Agents fetch documentation in a single HTTP request, count the tokens, and silently discard it if it does not fit in the context window, so conventional analytics metrics such as scroll depth, dwell time, and clicks are never recorded
  • In response, the concept of Agentic Engine Optimization (AEO) has been proposed: structuring, formatting, and serving documentation so that agents can actually use it
  • If SEO was optimization for search crawlers and human click patterns, AEO targets a new consumer: AI agents that autonomously fetch, parse, and reason over content
  • The core of AEO is discoverability, ease of parsing, token efficiency, capability signaling, and access control; if any one of these fails, the agent skips the content or produces incorrect output
  • Teams that respond early gain the advantage of having their APIs recommended and integrated by agents, and documenting for agents ends up producing better documentation for human readers as well

Key considerations

  • Discoverability – Can agents find the documentation without JavaScript rendering?
  • Parsability – Is it machine-readable without interpreting the visual layout?
  • Token efficiency – Does it fit within a typical agent context window without truncation?
  • Capability signaling – Does the API communicate "what it does" rather than "how to call it"?
  • Access control – Does robots.txt actually allow AI traffic?
