Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., or AMD, is an American integrated circuit manufacturer located in Sunnyvale, Santa Clara County, California. Founded in 1969 mainly by former Fairchild Semiconductor employees, AMD is the second-largest manufacturer of x86-architecture-compatible processors after Intel, and also holds a leading position in the flash memory field. In July 2008, Dirk Meyer took over the positions of CEO and chairman from Dr. Héctor Ruiz. Dirk Meyer was dismissed by the board over issues such as the Bulldozer problems and the sale of Aderno to Qualcomm, and Rory Read became the new CEO. The current CEO and chair is Dr. Lisa Su.
AMD is well known for x86-compatible processors such as Athlon, Athlon 64, Opteron, Turion 64, Sempron, and Duron. AMD also makes low-clock mobile CPUs suited for laptops, such as Geode. On June 24, 2006, AMD agreed to acquire and merge with ATI for 5.4 billion dollars.
In addition, Phenom was released in 2007, followed by models such as Phenom II and Athlon II. In 2011 it released Llano, the first-generation APU, an accelerated processing unit integrating a CPU and GPU into a single chipset, along with the newly designed Bulldozer, and in 2012 it introduced Piledriver, slightly improved over Bulldozer, and the second-generation APU Trinity. In 2013 it released the third-generation APU Richland, which raised the CPU and GPU clocks of the second-generation APU Trinity, and released the FX-9XXX series, which only increased the operating clock of existing Piledriver-based products. In 2014, the fourth-generation APU Kaveri, based on the Steamroller architecture, was released, with CPU improvements over the third-generation APU Richland and a GPU generation change to GCN.
AMD is Intel's only significant rival in the (x86-based) personal computer CPU market. Since AMD merged with ATI in 2006, AMD has also gained a high share of the graphics processing unit (GPU, graphics card) market.
