Acceptance testing

Acceptance testing is one of the information system tests, the stage that gives final confirmation that a system is ready for use in the actual operating environment. The system test is evaluated by users and checked by administrators. Once all stakeholders are satisfied with the new system, it is formally accepted for installation.

Types of acceptance testing

There are two types of product acceptance test procedures.

User acceptance testing

This may include factory acceptance testing (FAT), i.e. the testing done by a vendor before the product or system is moved to its destination site, after which site acceptance testing (SAT) may be performed by the users at the site.

Operational acceptance testing

Also known as operational readiness testing, this refers to the checking done to a system to ensure that processes and procedures are in place to allow the system to be used and maintained. This may include checks done to back-up facilities, procedures for disaster recovery, training for end users, maintenance procedures, and security procedures.

Contract and regulation acceptance testing

In contract acceptance testing, a system is tested against acceptance criteria as documented in a contract, before the system is accepted. In regulation acceptance testing, a system is tested to ensure it meets governmental, legal and safety standards.

Factory Acceptance Test (FAT)

The purpose of FAT is to confirm that the system is set up correctly and works as expected from the hardware and configuration software perspective before it is shipped to the site.

In more detail, it is the procedure of verifying, through document review and testing at the manufacturer's site before shipment or transport, that ordered equipment whose fabrication is complete or in its final stage has been built to satisfy the User Requirement Specification (URS), design documents and other specifications, the defined Acceptance Criteria, and so on.

The factory acceptance test is performed at the supplier's factory site to confirm that specific requirements are met.

Site Acceptance Test (SAT)

The purpose of SAT is to confirm that the processing units of the control and safety systems work fully according to the functional specification before they are put into operation.

The site acceptance test is performed at the work site, and acceptance leads to plant start-up.
