a.out is an executable and object file format used in older Unix-like operating systems. It was later also used as a shared library format. The name a.out is short for assembler output.

Most operating systems that used a.out later replaced it with the ELF format. Today, traces of the name a.out remain in its use as the default output file name in some compilers and linkers.
