4K resolution (4K Ultra High Definition; 4K Ultra HD; 4K UHD) is a term for a next-generation high-definition resolution with a horizontal resolution of 4 kilopixels (4 kP). As of January 2012, no standard had yet been established, so products are being released in two variants: 4,096 × 2,160 and 3,840 × 2,160.

The Consumer Electronics Association defines 4K as 3840×2160, four times Full HD for television broadcasting, while the 4K specified by Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI), the standard for digital cinema, is defined as 4,096 × 2,160.

As of January 2009, it has been announced mainly in expensive professional equipment, and although not a consumer appliance, Toshiba announced the world's first LCD TV with a 4K2K panel in December 2011, so the number of supporting devices is expected to grow.

It is drawing attention as a new video standard, and displays and projectors capable of showing it are already sold to the general public, but because storage media standards and cabling methods have not been settled, content has not been settled either, so it is generally less well known.
