3D Modeling

lastmod 2026-09-22created 2014-05-0317 edits

3D modeling is stored as data in a form that computers can understand. A 3D model can generally take on a shape and texture similar to a real object through the rendering process.

3D modeling means three-dimensional modeling: depicting real-world objects through 3D models in virtual space, or modeling a physical environment to create the appearance of objects within a virtual environment.

The field of computer graphics in particular seeks to represent such 3D models, and it can depict real-world objects through 3D models in virtual space or model a physical environment to create the appearance of objects within a virtual environment. Recently, 3D modeling has been in the spotlight in entertainment fields such as film, animation, and advertising, and as a means of design and artistic expression in physical experiment simulation, architecture, design, and more.

Modeling methods

Graphics textbooks and teaching materials on the market usually teach that there are the following modeling methods. Of course, in practice there are many more modeling methods than these.

  • Wireframe model:
    • As the name suggests, it models only the skeleton. As it looks, it is a very old modeling method, and since modeling is fast, it is mainly used for prototyping.
    • In 1972, the first short animation was made using this method.
    • The technique for removing these lines is hidden line removal.
  • Solid model: Models while filling the interior of the solid as well.
  • Surface model: Models only the surface, using faces such as triangles or quadrilaterals, i.e. polygons, as the basic unit.
  • Parametric model: Modeling with mathematical formulas. Mainly used for modeling curved surfaces and the like.
  • Fractal model: Applies fractal theory to develop simple shapes into complex ones.
  • Particle model: A modeling method mainly used to represent particles such as fire, smoke, and fog.
