3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) is a method that represents a complex 3D scene with thousands to millions of 3D Gaussians (splats). Each Gaussian holds the following information.
- 3D position (x, y, z)
- Size (scale or covariance)
- Rotation (orientation)
- Color (RGB)
- Opacity (alpha)
- View-direction-dependent characteristic values
The core idea is to project these points onto the screen and spread them smoothly as Gaussians on the GPU to render images in real time.
